I'm reading an article from the Thursday Wall Street Journal on government involvement in General Motors. Here is a link to the article I would like this article to be required reading for every American. The article talks about how Congress has involved itself into every area of GM's restructuring process. From trying to get closed dealerships re-opened to protesting a Chinese plant GM wanted to build for it's new small cars, limiting pay for executives etc...
The point is that Congress has zero business sense. They cannot make a sound business decision because the only stake they have in the matter is re-election. They don't care if the business fails or thrives, they only care about getting votes from their constituents. That's no way to run a business or entire industry.
This article is a sobering reminder that Government run healthcare will operate the same way as the Post Office, Military and now General Motors. All areas where Congress lets ego and emotion win over sound business decisions from seasoned business professionals. This isn't a one party problem either. The article linked above clearly points out that a Republican from Montana who was against the GM bailout is now interjecting himself into GMs business and is trying to get them to keep a contract with a mine in Montana even though GM needed to get out of the contract and declaring bankruptcy was the only way they could do it. What does this mean when the Government interjects itself into our healthcare? We've already had evidence that Congress thinks they know more than our doctors, and that they can somehow magically provide coverage for everyone just by taxing the rich. Most of us know that's not possible and that the middle class is going to end up paying for that, the bailout, the social security bailout that's coming and then the medicare bailout coming after that. There are other options on the table, I've read many of them and this article cements my opinion even more that the government should do more to provide an environment that allows insurance for everyone that needs it without getting Congress involved into making decisions for all of us.
